Multiplayer · no server needed

Shared worlds

Someone opens their singleplayer world, everyone else drops in. The host's browser is the server, so players connect straight to it. Nothing to rent, install or configure.

How to share your world in three steps

Your own browser hosts the world, so there is nothing to download and no server to pay for. It stays open as long as your game tab is.

  1. Open your world

Start the game and open any singleplayer world.

    In the game, press
    1. Esc
    2. Invite
    3. Start shared world

Pick the MinePlay relay. You get a five-letter code.

  2. Publish it here

Come back to this tab. Your world is already waiting below.

    On this page, press
    1. Publish world

It goes on the list here, and on the map on the home page.

  3. Friends join

Send them the code, or let them find you on the list.

    Your friend, press
    1. Join

They are in your world. No download, no server, no port forwarding.

Open one of yours and publish it below. It shows up here — and on the home page map — the second you do.

Share your own world

Open a world to the relay in-game and publish it here so other players can find it. Sign in first, so the listing is tied to your account and only you can take it down.

How shared worlds work

A shared world is a normal singleplayer world that the host has opened up. Their browser keeps running the world and every player who joins connects directly to them, peer to peer. MinePlay's relay only introduces the two sides — it never carries the game itself.

Three consequences worth knowing before you host:

  • The host has to stay

Close the tab and the world closes with it: everyone is disconnected and the join code stops working. Nothing is lost — the world is saved in the host's browser and backed up to their account — but it has to be the same player who opens it again.

  • Join codes are temporary

Each time a world is opened it gets a fresh five-character code, so never bookmark one. Bookmark this page instead; it always shows what is actually live.

  • Players see each other's IP addresses

That is how peer-to-peer works, here and in every other WebRTC game. If it matters to you, host for people you know and leave the world unlisted — the code still works.

Joining a world

Press Join on any world above and we open the right client with the code ready. In-game, go to Multiplayer → Direct Connect → Join Shared World, paste the code, and you are in.

Both players need the same relay in their client. MinePlay adds ours automatically — if you play elsewhere too, add the address below under Multiplayer → Network Settings → Add Relay.

Shared world or a real server?

A shared world is perfect for an evening with a few friends. If you want a world that stays up while you sleep and holds dozens of players, that is a dedicated server — a machine running EaglerXServer somewhere. MinePlay lists those too, but does not host them.
